Herbie King talks promoting and more.
Herbie King is a promoter who not only enjoys music but lives it on a daily! His company Herbie King Promotions is always looking out for new and upcoming talent! When we got to speak, it seemed only fair to snap him for a quick one on one
Herbie;
What is your role as a promoter like?
I work with various artists &/musicians with a strategy to provide high-quality, well-run bookings for unsigned and independent musicians who would like to make a career out of their music, if given the chance. It’s an attempt to prepare them for a more professional platform and to get them exposed to people who are more influential in the industry. I try to only focus on musicians whose music is original.
I promote several types of music from Afro beat, rnb, hiphop and dancehall and I am able to promote each kind of music as I have a vision of going global
Do the artists or musicians you represent reflect your music choices?
Yes, all the artists that I am supporting strongly reflect my music choices. However I am also interested in exploring all kinds of music and seeing what they have to offer. I can’t promote what I don’t like, not very well. In addition, this wouldn’t make me true to myself or my clients and the goals I intend to achieve. I think a successful seller needs to promote what they care about or are interested in.
What are the challenges you face as a promoter, what are the roadblocks?
Promoters are sometimes looked at as the ‘bad guys;’ It is hard sometimes for an artist to trust you as sometimes the artists I have worked with have worked with other promoters in the past who they trusted, paid and still got no work done.
Some artists also rush me, wanting to be out there… So getting the balance and trying to offer them that reassurance that promotions take time and also promoting talent needs to be done well and not hurriedly so that their impact is powerful is such a job but eventually with my artists we are able to get along and understand each other.
What has made you tick as a promoter and any word to those starting out as promoters?
I am not ashamed to promote my artists’ shows and albums. I used to feel so embarrassed about asking my friends to come to shows but you have to. How else are people going to find out about what and who you are promoting?
I am also proud of what I do and not ashamed of promoting the artists I work with.
I do both online and on the ground promotions.
Which artists have you worked with and/ promoted?
I have worked with Joe Gaya, Dro Hyve, QueenMonster, Orisho Sounds, Eddy Kenzo, City Rock Entertainment and many others.
