To some of us the world of Grime is a somewhat new thing that kind of accidentally slips in and out of our radar anytime we listen to Garage sounds or British Rap. It is somewhat benign to us but its essence and growth is flourishing at a bewildering rate in the Diaspora. There is only one soul to grace the Ugandan Grime scene and she is taking it to a titillating level. HERBIE KING PROMOTIONS cosied up with the gorgeous, stunning and talented Kleo Namiiro, a UK-based Grime artist adding aLuganda zing to Grime.
How did You start out as a Music Artist
I started out way back in college doing contemporary dance, reciting poetry with instrumental music in the background and singing. I also attempted rap songs. I first joined a group 'Raw Perfection' that I sang in for a while before moving to my solo project. My music was being recognised and I was picked up by the MOBOS http://www.mobo.com/ in2013 as an Unsung finalist but I wasn't so keen on my music out there. My first solo project was 'Into You,' I sang other songs like 'Say I do,' and more recently I have a song 'Ntuuse (I've landed)' which is out now.
I love your flair and style where do you get that from?
Thank you! I believe that fashion always changes and that we should never stay the same. My fashion sense varies with time and with my growth. My fashion sense is also a part of me branding 'Kleo,' its important to sound not only right but look right and memorable. Are there any artists who have influenced your development as an artist?
I will definitely say that Lisa Left Eye is one of my influences, I relate to her on so many levels. Another is Lauryn Hill, she is my other inspiration but overall I have to build the 'Kleo' brand as I felt that there was a gap in rap for youth and the community. I realised that I had to be smart, position myself lyrically different and make tactical moves to up my music.
Is there a particular kind of Sound You are trying to put across in your music or are you creating your own music style?
Is there a particular kind of Sound You are trying to put across in your music or are you creating your own music style?
Turning to grime in Luganda was a big risk but no one has tried it before so I decided to give it my best shot and its catching on. One of my singles 'Ntuuse (I've landed)' https://soundcloud.com/katelynkleopatra/kleo-official has and is still a success.
Who Manages you, do you have mentors and do you work with other artists?
I manage myself. when you are doing something different. People come and tell you what to do, what works and what wont work. But no one has done what I am doing before so I am going through with it. Its a new experience and I am enjoying it. I give credit to Peng Peng a well known blogger who saw me when I had just started out and he has given me pointers and advice as I have gone by, I have also a close friend in AVM a UK-based Afro beats Artist who has supported me and I have other people in my camp that continually encourage and support me in this business. Yes I have worked with other artists.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
My new song 'Ntuuse (I've landed) is out. I am now concentrating on making more music in Luganda Grime and we will see as my music spreads out there.
How do you deal with your fans and are you in a relationship
I am thankful to all my fans for their support. Yes I am in a relationship. I am fortunate to be in a relationship with someone who lets me do my music thing and gives me the space to grow in my talent. I also carry myself professionally and know how to conduct myself around my fans.
